Quoting:  Don't quote more extensively than is necessary. The quotation should remain subservient to the main argument of the text. The need for quotation varies according to the subject matter or discipline.   Wherever direct quotation is used, reproduce exactly the wording, spelling, word division, capitalization, and punctuation of the original, even if inconsistent within the quoted matter itself.

Short quotations:  In running text, enclose all quotations within double quotation marks.(") If you have a quotation within a short quote (one incorporated within the text), enclose it within single quotation marks ('). When a period or comma occurs with closing quotation marks, place the period or comma within the closing quotation mark.  Put any other punctuation mark outside the quotation marks unless that mark is part of the quoted material.

Long Quotations:  Quotations over four lines long (40 or more words) should be set apart from the text proper in block style with indentation of 5 spaces on both sides. The relationship between quoted extracts and the surrounding text should be made clear to the reader; it is a common practice to introduce a quotation by using a colon at the end of the preceding text. Do not use quotation marks around indented quotations.  BGP Corp. requires that indented quotations be single-spaced, especially when quoting poetry.  Type the entire quotation on the indented margin without the usual opening paragraph indentation. If the quotation is more than one paragraph, indent the first line of the second and additional paragraphs five spaces from the already indented margin, approximately an inch from the left margin.   Enclose a quotation within a block quotation in double (") quotation marks.

Indicating omitted text:  Use ellipses with a space before and after ( … ) to indicate omitted material.  Note that the key sequence is Alt/0133 to invoke the ellipses special character on a PC computer.  This is not the same as three period characters as the spacing between the period characters is different and it will help ensure that there will not be any inappropriate line breaks.  When indicating omission between sentences follow the punctuation mark for the sentence with a space and then present the ellipses.  by three spaced periods (. …) (? …) (! …).
